How to Use NFC Tags with Apple Shortcuts to Automate Tasks

You can pair an NFC tag with Apple Shortcuts to create custom automations on your iPhone. This allows you to open apps, send messages, start timers, or even begin a grocery order with a single tap.

What You’ll Need:

- iPhone (iOS 13 or later)
-  A Hide & Hammer bag charm with an NFC tag
- Shortcuts app (pre-installed on iPhones)
- Your chosen app installed (e.g. Ocado)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open the Shortcuts App

- Launch the “Shortcuts” app on your iPhone
- Tap “Automation” at the bottom of the screen
- Tap the “+” icon in the top right
- Select “Create Personal Automation”

2. Choose NFC as the Trigger

- Scroll down and tap “NFC”
- Tap “Scan” and hold your iPhone near the NFC tag
- Give your NFC tag a name (e.g. “Ocado Order”) and tap “Next”

3. Set the Action

- Tap “Add Action”
- Use the search bar to find the action you want (e.g. “Open App”)
- Tap “Open App” then choose “Ocado” from the app list
- Tap “Next”

4. Disable Confirmation (Optional)

- If you don’t want to be asked every time:
  - Toggle off “Ask Before Running”
  - Confirm by tapping “Don’t Ask”

5. Finish and Test

- Tap “Done” to save your automation
- Tap your iPhone to the NFC tag (top edge near the camera)
- The Ocado app should open automatically

Other Ideas You Can Automate with NFC:

- Open a Maps route to your office
- Launch Spotify or your morning playlist
- Turn on Do Not Disturb or set a Focus mode
- Start a message to a contact (e.g. “I’m on my way”)
- Open your calendar or reminders
- Run a shortcut that dims lights and locks doors (if you use HomeKit)

Things to Remember:

• NFC automations only work when the phone is unlocked.
  - You must have the Shortcuts app installed and automation permissions allowed.
  - Apps must be installed on your device to open with a shortcut.
  - You can edit or delete your automation at any time from the Shortcuts app.
